Musical Pink Party Games

Post on May 31st 2008

Pick a couple of Pink party games to really get the place rocking at your kids next big music themed party.

Pinks Dance Down:

Play some music by Pink loudly for these Pink party games for the kids will want to feel the beat when competing with each other in a dance down. Pick teams to create their own special moves and take turns competing against each other during the dance down. You can have the adults at the Pink party vote on whos the best dancer and which team is the best. Make sure to give out plenty of dance floor prizes like pink feather boas or inflatables that the kids can toss around the Pink party games area.

Adult Musical Chairs:

These classic kids games are easily modernized for the Pink party games with some of her music. You can even add a real twist to the Pink party games by inviting a musician or a band to cover some of Pinks songs. When the band is playing the kids will be competing with each other to get into a chair before the music starts. When they stop, whoever is left standing is out of the musical chairs game.

Reinvent the musical chairs game by hiding the chairs around the party area and setting an adult to watch each chair, and then when the music is playing the kids have to run off to find a chair to sit in before the music stops. This is loads of fun and keeps the tension high because the kids will definitely be looking for chairs so they can stay in the game.

Youll have a great time at your Pink party games with these two games for the kids. Hint: You can hold the party during the day and play music as loud as you want.

Can You Recognize An Operatic Voice?

Post on May 31st 2008

Does your son or daughter have a voice that is good enough for the opera house?

But before you answer that question, ask yourself another. Can you recognize an operatic voice before it has been trained?

There is little doubt the world of opera is an exciting place. It can bring fame and fortune to those who are good enough if they are prepared to work very hard for many years and then get the lucky breaks.

Like any other exacting profession opera singing is an art of discipline, even for the most gifted singer. Not only must the voice be properly trained, but music theory and ear training must be studied, roles learnt and memorized, foreign languages studied and acting perfected.

A parent wishing to guide their son or daughter into the world of opera should first consult with people in the business of opera. People whom they know and can trust. Those who really care. It is important to find the right people in the industry, get to know them and seek their professional advice. It is essential that you get expert opinions about the potential and prospects for your children from those whose comments and judgment you can trust.

Given the encouragement from such a person or persons, the next thing is to find a singing teacher. They are plentiful, but don’t come cheaply. Look for a sympathetic teacher with clear communication skills. When you find one, outline a teaching program over a limited time frame and make sure this schedule is maintained. Some teachers take on sudents and just keep teaching without end goals in sight. Avoid them. They’re looking after themselves, not your son or daughter.

The initial training period should cover the basic elements of voice production and building a limited repertoire. The early 17th and 18th century Italian arias are an ideal starting program and all reputable singing teachers should be aware of these songs which are readily available in albums, preferably with CD accompaniment discs for learning purposes.

For this part of the early training program, a maximum of two years should be adequate. If the student hasn’t made sufficient progress in the first two years, perhaps they don’t have the necessary commitment for such a demanding career. Be honest with them and yourself. But be firm. It’s your money you are paying out!

After completing the initial part of the program students should then start the preparation for an audition at a recognized Music Academy. These are attached either to an Opera House or University, depending on where you live. Audition programs for entrance to these institutions can be accessed through websites quite readily, but take particular care to investigate entrance requirements, especially in the case of a University Music Academy.

In addition to preparing a singing program of classical songs, operatic arias and excerpts from oratorio, music academies require knowledge of music theory and ear training (solfege) for passing an audition. A six months program should be sufficient to absorb enough information from a recognized teacher of music theory to pass this test.

Additional training is probably optional, but could prove useful for the future. Many good singers study piano. It helps them to learn their music without teachers, or simpy to augment a teaching program with a teacher.

Students who enter a Music Academy and study for a first or second degree over a period of some years will derive considerable benefit from this formal tuition. It will pave the way for auditioning in opera houses and with impresarios around the world. In fact, the competition is so intense that many opera houses won’t even bother to audition singers without formal training at a recognized academy.

So, how long is all this going to take? Probably not less than six years, possibly up to ten for a second degree at an academy. It’s a long haul, but given the natural gift of your son or daughter, you owe it to them and yourself to ensure the voice is properly trained and equipped for the onstage debut.

Should luck play an important part in their career, students must have the ability to get up on center stage at a moment’s notice and woo an audience. If they fail, that’s probably the end of the road. But if they are ready and succeed, that a major step up the ladder to fame and fortune.

And that’s exactly how some opera stars were born! Maybe luck played an important part, but they were ready and when that lucky break arrived, capitalized on their good fortune.

Granted, every parent thinks their son is another Enrico Caruso or their daughter a second Maria Callas. Don’t delude yourself into thinking they are the greatest just because they are your children.

Ask people who know. People who care for your kids.

Strategic Thinking For A Successful Employee Retention Strategy

Post on May 31st 2008

Look around you in todays business world. It is no secret that it is becoming more difficult to recruit and retain skilled employees. In fact, one could say that select businesses and industries are desperate or becoming desperate to find people with the needed skills and attitudes.

An often ignored or neglected source of talent is the 45 to 65 year old age group. This group happens to be the largest demographic group in the US census. Estimates indicate that one of every two people in the United States will be 50 years old or older by the year 2020. Although these older workers are willing to stay in the workforce longer or even re-enter the workforce after they retire, most businesses still continue to cater to younger workers. Proof of this comes from a survey conducted by the Society of Human Resources Managers that shows 65% of companies surveyed exerted no effort to recruit older workers for open positions. The survey also showed that 81% of the companies did not have benefit plans designed with older workers in mind.

Okay what about your business? Have you anticipated and responded to the challenge of employee retention? Or are you like too many businesses that do not focus on employee retention until turnover increases. The successful businesses today have a formalized employee retention program as part of their business strategy. They take a proactive approach to prevent unnecessary employee turnover.

Your strategic thinking business coach suggests that you use some strategic thinking to develop a successful employee retention strategy. Here are some steps to use in developing such a strategy from your business.

A Couple of Fine Dining Tea Party Games

Post on May 31st 2008

Even though a tea party should be sit down, it should also have some entertaining tea party games to keep the guests awake.

Tea Words:

Before the tea party games start, make up a list of unusual words from the dictionary. You can make each of the words you choose relatable to the theme of tea party if you like. Then create index cards with each word chosen placed on a separate card. Below that word you will place multiple choice options for the definition of said word. You could create an index card for the words, White Tea, with the following: A) A Chinese Tea created for foreigners, B) a tea made from leaves that are specially prepared to preserve the most antioxidants, C) a tea that has hallucenagenic properties. In the case of this word the correct definition would be, B.

Ask each person a word definition in turn and have them guess an answer. However is right at the tea party games gets a point. Keep a tally and the person with the most points is the winner.

Tea Mime:

These silly Tea party games are great to get a laugh out of your guests and it works best at tea parties where everyone knows each other. Write down the names of all the guests on pieces of paper and during the Tea party games have everyone draw a name from a hat. If a person draws their own name at the tea party games he or she must put it back.

Then tell the group that each player will mime the dominate emotion of the person whose name theyve drawn at the party. If Aunt Joy is really happy then someone would act really happy and the other players at the tea party games would have to guess who the player is imitating.

Fun, fun, is all youll have with these two tea party games for your guests. You never know when youll need them so keep the games handy for other impromptu events.

Where to Find Free and Cheap Royalty-Free Images for Your Website

Post on May 31st 2008

In the not too distant past, the stock photo image market was an expensive and confusing place to source images.

A handful of large photo stock companies dominated the market and fixed the prices out of reach for small website owners.

This situation has dramatically changed over the last five years, thanks to the internet.

There are now dozens of websites where you can find free or cheap royalty free photos.

I will cover the ones that I have used and can recommend.

Free Stock Photos

StockVault.net (www.stockvault.net) is a great resource for free, good quality photos and much more.

At the time of this writing, they had a gallery of around 7,000 free images, including the image on the right of this page.

On the website, they also have a lot of other useful information, including design tutorials, Photoshop plug-ins and a design-related directory.

StockVault.net should be your first port of call when looking for images for your website.

Cheap Royalty-Free Images

If you can’t find any suitable free images, then it’s time to turn to the excellent microstock’ websites where you can buy images for between $1 and $15. The quality of the images on these sites varies a lot, but overall, the photos are very good.

The way that most of these sites work is simple. Photographers and illustrators from around the world, some professional and some amateurs, submit their photos to the site. The site editors review the images and the ones that they judge to be good enough are published for sale on the site. When an image is sold, the creator automatically receives a commission of up to 60% of the sale price.

The sites that I have used, in no particular order, are:

IStockPhoto.com (www.istockphoto.com)

IStockPhoto pioneered the microstock industry and now has the second largest selection of photos for sale on the internet. At the time of this writing, there were 1.8 million images to choose from and that number is growing daily. Prices range from $1 for an image suitable for web publishing up to $15 for an image suitable for creating a large print poster.

Dreamstime (www.dreamstime.com dreams with an s’)

Dreamstime does not have as large a selection as IStockPhoto, but I think the overall quality is better. You purchase the photos by buying credits. The more credits you buy at any one time, the cheaper each credit is. Credits start at $19.99 for 20 and go up to 130 credits for $99.99. You can also buy a monthly subscription to the site. One credit buys one image suitable for web publishing. A large image suitable for large prints is three credits.

Fotolia (www.fotolia.com)

Fotolia is the newest of the microstock sites, but they have made rapid inroads into the market. They claim to have 3.3 million images to choose from. Prices rage from $1/1 to $3/3 per image. Their image search is more advanced than on the other sites and the quality is generally very good.

Between these four sites, you should be able to find a photo to illustrate every possible website and article. For website publishers, these stock libraries are a dream come true. You can now have a professionally illustrated site for as little as a dollar a page.

And if you want to make a bit of money on the side, you can always start submitting your own photos to these sites for other people to buy.

Digital Signage - Out-of-Home Advertising Gains Public Recognition

Post on May 31st 2008

The concept of advertising with media outside of the home gained a good degree of notoriety Sunday in The Los Angeles Times with a major article by staff writer Alana Semuels.

The 1,000-word article, “Now showing very near you…”, makes a strong case for digital signage networks and advertising as well as other out-of-home media. In the article, Semuels identifies digital video recorders as a major culprit in diluting the frequency with which traditional television commercials are viewed. As a result, advertisers are hungry for an effective substitute, and out-of-home ads appear to be the solution.

Semuels elaborates on a major theme of several of my recent columns, namely every day more TV viewers are skipping past commercials with their DVRs, making in-store, out-of-home advertising all the more appealing. (Two of my earlier columns discussing the impact of DVRs on TV viewing, include: “Digital Signage Payoff: What Is A Challenge For TV May Be A Boon For Digital Signage Networks” and “Digital Signage Market Poised to Skyrocket.”)

According to the LA Times story, about 20 percent of U.S. households now have digital video recorders. The ease with which viewers in these homes can skip past the commercials has a growing number of advertisers interested in out-of-home ads on flat panel displays near the point of sale where they can influence shoppers making purchasing decisions. And, if they can’t influence a particular buying decision, at least they can elevate brand awareness.

Quoting San Francisco-based Premier Retail Networks, which has 200,000 screens in 6,500 stores nationwide, the article points out 42 percent of shoppers remember a brand they see on in-store screens, twice number for television commercials.

It’s no wonder then that a recent forecast from PQ Media Research indicates that spending on out-of-home advertising will grow 27.7 percent this year. The statistics, part of the company’s “PQ Media Alternative Out-of-Home Media Forecast 2007-2011″ report show the category to be among the fastest growing segments in the media industry.

Last year, media spending on out-of-home advertising reached $1.69 billion, up 27 percent from the 2005. In fact, spending on out-of-home advertising has grown at double-digit rates every year from 2001-2006 with a compounded annual growth rate of 22.6 percent, according to the PQ Media report.

In discussing the reasons for the growth, Patrick Quinn, president and CEO of PQ Media said: “Unlike its mass media peers, alternative out-of-home advertising is impervious to channel or web surfing and is immune to audience fragmentation.”

PQ Media identified several factors driving the growth of out-of-home advertising, including:

  • advertiser perception that out-of-home ads provide high engagement, targeting options, proximity to point-of-sale, measurable impact and cost effectiveness;
  • data indicating exposure to and recall of these media are growing;
  • research suggesting the vast majority of consumers view alternative out-of-home media as favorable and educational;
  • new technology enabling companies to launch digital advertising platforms that generate higher revenues than the conventional formats they replace.
  • PQ Media divides out-of-home advertising into three categories: video advertising networks and screens; digital billboards and displays; and ambient advertising. The research firm has found video advertising networks is the largest category, accounting for 60 percent of all out-of-home ad spending. Spending on this category grew 28 percent in 2006 to $1.01 billion with double-digit growth in four markets: in-theater, in-office, in-store and in-transit, according to the company.

High-profile news articles, like the one from the LA Times, draw the public’s attention to this market. More importantly, this sort of coverage helps busy ad professionals focused on traditional media segments to notice the out-of-home advertising market. As these ad pros have their own “Ah-Hah” moments thanks to these sorts of articles, it won’t take too much effort to back up the perception that out-of-home advertising is a growing, important new segment. Research, such as that from PQ Media, makes it easy for out-of-home advertising to be taken seriously -and more importantly for ad buyers to consider it as a new part of their media mix. As they do, out-of-home advertising and digital signage are likely to enjoy even wider acceptance and use.

    Digital Signage
Digital signage is the newest player to the world of out-of-home advertising, and has been taking over the industry with a vengeance. Earning a Living Crafting at Home - Is It Possible?

    Post on May 31st 2008

Making crafts at home can be both fun and rewarding, I know many stay at home moms that make a nice part-time income off the crafts that they make.

I think its possible and have succeeded in earning a full time income off crafting. When I was on bed rest while pregnant with my son, I had nothing more to do then craft. So I started of thinking of ideas to turn it into profit.

Keys to turning a profit are:

Deciding what type of products to make
Pricing the products for maximum profits
    Finding the right selling avenues

These are not all of the things to think about, but some of the most critical. You will need to figure out along the way what works best for you of course.

Finding items that take little time, little money to make and can make a good profit is the hard part. Thats one of the worst things about trying to sell handmade items. Few appreciate the hard work involved in making them, and very few are willing to pay enough for our items for us to show a nice profit.

When counting on your craft items to pay your bills, you must consider several factors when deciding what types of items to make.

First you need to make sure that your item will bring a good profit. If you spend 10 hours making something and it only brings $5 in profits, then you have done nothing but waste time and money on something that will not help you make money.

On the other hand, if you spend 10 hours making 10 items that bring you $10 per item then you are doing much better at earning enough to pay your bills.

Making a decision on what product to make should be thought out, you dont want to rush yourself and end up losing money in the end.

When making your choice, you would first want to consider the cost of the materials, you can make cut backs or changes to make sure the project still looks good but costs the least amount of money to make. This will help ensure you a larger profit; you dont have to cut quality just to make a wonderful project.

Make sure you focus first on the quality of your products themselves and dont base your decisions thinking that the higher the cost of materials, the more people will be willing to pay for the product because this isnt so.

You will also need to consider the amount of time is involved in making your items.

If youre selling at craft shows, then you will need to ensure that you have plenty of merchandise to stock your booth, and that you can quickly restock again when you sell a lot.

One thing I have done in the past is make sure I have items that are fairly simple to make, and that I can work on while I am at the show. This helps with the slow times and also builds your inventory. Dont do something that maybe you have developed a special trick for though; you wouldnt want other learning your secrets. Make sure for those items they would have to purchase from you if they like it and not just replicate it.

When selling at craft shows, one must ALWAYS make sure they provide some nice dollar items for children because there are usually thousands of children at the shows whose parents give them a dollar or two to spend in any way that they like, and the children do enjoy picking out their own toys.

Sadly there are few crafters that take this into consideration when creating their products for their shows. They cater to the adults (usually the women) and forget that children want to smile too.

    RECAP:

Focus on quality because high quality should always be your first consideration.

Just because material may cost more doesnt mean you should use it every time.

Provide a nice selection of products instead of just a few items.

Make sure you offer several products that are super fast to make in case you need something to restock your booths quickly.

Include cheap items that children can afford.

    Super Glue vs Miracle Glue

    Post on May 31st 2008

For the last half century or so the conventional wisdom for gluing something together when you really needed it glued now was to go out and buy a small tube of superglue.

Super glue or Krazy glue have been used for repairing a thousand different things - From broken toys, to fingernails, to skin.

But it has had its problems. Ive heard just about every complaint out there about superglue or krazy glue. Often, it just doesnt work or, the biggest complaint seems to be that when you are ready to use it there is nothing to use it has dried up. My unsubstantiated theory is that is why the containers have gotten smaller over the years. One never gets more than one use out of a tube of super glue because the cap glues shut and you cant get at the rest of it. So, the manufacturers have now made the tubes a one shot deal.

Approximately ten years ago another product hit the market on this side of the Atlantic - an industrial version of this type of glue that has been marketed mainly through trade shows and events. The main ones available are Miracle Glue, The Last Glue, Pasco Fix and Lighting Bond. You can invariably find these glues being demonstrated at Home Shows and Boat Shows around the country. Most can now be found more easily on the internet.

Technically, the difference is this: The base of all of these adhesives is something called cyanoacrylate. If you move in the hobby circles, it is commonly referred to as CA. The latter, newer glues are far superior. The main difference is in the distillation process the number of times the product is distilled. Super Glue and Krazy Glue can be considered your raw form. They are your crude oil. The newer products: Miracle Glue, The Last Glue and the others are the refined oil. They are distilled several times. The solvents are distilled out. Solvents make super glue dry out too quickly and get brittle and discolor once cured.

In application here are some of the differences. The newer glues come in larger bottles which generally last much longer a year or two if kept refrigerated or in the freezer. You can get literally hundreds of uses if you take care of a bottle. Because there are no solvents, they will not dry out quickly when exposed to the air. If you forget to put the lid back on for even a couple of hours it isnt a problem as long as you dont knock it over. They bond extremely quickly depending on the material being adhered. And for the most part once glued the item will stay glued. The better ones dry both clear and flexible. For all the fishermen out there you can mend your waders with these types of glue as well. Because there are no solvents, you wont melt the neoprene. Super glue or krazy glue will eat a nasty hole right through your waders or wetsuit.

So, the next time your are visiting a Home Show, Boat Show and sometimes the state fair, have a look for the person demonstrating the miracle glue. Quite a show! You will be impressed, Im sure.

Go to the website and you can learn lots more information about the various applications of Miracle Glue.

Business Cash Advance Strategies - Ten Problems to Avoid With Credit Card Receivables

    Post on May 31st 2008

Even thriving small businesses frequently need more cash than they can borrow from a bank. One of the least-known commercial financing strategies for small businesses is potentially the best strategy to quickly obtain needed cash for growing their business. This commercial financing strategy uses an under-utilized business asset (credit card receivables) to obtain business cash advances based upon a merchant’s sales volume. These business cash advances typically vary from $5,000 to $300,000. Small businesses will frequently benefit from converting future cash flow into immediate working capital. The most likely candidates to benefit from this strategy are restaurants, bars, service businesses and retail stores.

This strategy is also known as “credit card factoring”. Many small businesses have relied upon a commercial financing strategy called “receivables factoring” which allows them to sell their future receivables at a discount. Most small businesses cannot adequately document their receivables in order to qualify for this kind of commercial financing. Many other small businesses (such as restaurants, bars, service businesses and retail stores noted above) simply do not have such receivables to rely upon as a commercial financing tool.

What these businesses do have in many cases is documented sales volume and documented credit card sales activity. It is this documented level of sales volume and credit card sales activity that becomes a financial asset to the business. Business cash advances up to $300,000 can be obtained based on a merchant’s sales volume and future credit card sales.

Before employing this strategy, small businesses should realize that there are several recurring potential problems that they need to anticipate. Ten common problems that small business owners should avoid when employing this strategy are highlighted below. Preferred/Recommended business cash advance requirements are shown in parentheses after each potential problem.

    1. Up-front fees (Preferred/Recommended: No up-front fees)
    2. Closing costs (Preferred/Recommended: No closing costs)
    3. Financial Statements required (Preferred/Recommended: Financial statements not required)
    4. Collateral required (Preferred/Recommended: Collateral not required)
    5. Fixed term to pay off the business cash advance (Preferred/Recommended: No fixed term for repayment)
    6. Fixed payments to pay off the business cash advance (Preferred/Recommended: No fixed payments)
    7. High credit scores (680 to 700 or higher) required to qualify (Preferred/Recommended: Credit scores of 500 or better)
    8. 2-3 years or more in business required to qualify (Preferred/Recommended: 1 year in business)
    9. 12 to 24 months of documented credit card sales of $10,000 to $25,000 or more required (Preferred/Recommended: 6 months of $4,000 or more)
    10. Maximum business cash advance of $10,000 to $50,000 (Preferred/Recommended: Maximum cash advance of $250,000 to $300,000)

Not all of these potential problems will be relevant to each commercial borrower. Most commercial borrowers will encounter at least 2-3 of these problems if they are reviewing business cash advance programs that use credit card receivables as the basis for obtaining short term business loans. It is not necessary to accept any of these problems in order to obtain business cash advances based on future credit card sales. There are viable credit card receivables programs which avoid all of the problems described above.
