Details of a Custom Home Theater

Post on Sep 30th 2008

A custom home theater is a great way to improve the interior of any home. If you are interested in this option, you will have hundreds of choices available to you. You can make your home media center into anything you want it to be and by customizing your home theater, you will have a unique space to occupy and entertain family and friends.

When you are customizing your home theater, you will need to buy several pieces of equipment and furniture.

The centerpiece of any home theater system is usually the television. If you are looking to customize your space, you will want to get a television that goes above and beyond normal duty. There are many options available to you, and you can choose your television based on size, model, and features. As a basic rule of thumb, if your room can handle it, bigger is always better. But remember, if you have a small space, you do not want to wedge a 60 inch television into it. This will only make the room seem small and cramped.

Another option to consider is the stereo system and speaker set up. A fully customized home theater system almost always has a surround sound speaker set up that brings top quality sound to your room. You can buy these pre packaged and they are not that difficult to set up. Be sure to get one with at least 5 speakers. If you really hate dealing with all those wires, consider getting a wireless sound system for your home theater.

Finally, when you are customizing your home theater, be sure to check into the different furniture options that are available. Your furniture can make or break your home theater, and you will want to be careful when making this decision. Of course, you want something that will be comfortable so that you can watch your movies and sporting events in luxury but at the same time you want something that looks good. Some people like to buy furniture that looks like movie house furniture while others opt for cushy sectionals that you can lounge out in. In the end it comes down to your preferences, your budget and what other purposes you use the room for.

When setting up your home theater, you want to be sure that every seat in the house has a great view as well as good sound. Place the television so that each seat has a good unobstructed view and your guests dont have to keep their heads turned to see the action. You also want to be sure the speakers are placed so that the side, center and back speakers are in the right position for every place you can sit.

Overall, a custom home theater can be set up in a number of different ways. When you are setting up your theater make sure you are creative. This will help to ensure that nobody else has a theater set up that looks like yours. And isnt that what customization is all about!

Downloadable Audio Books And Changing Playback Speed On MP3 Books And MP3 Voice Recordings

Post on Sep 30th 2008

Downloadable audio books (also called MP3 books) are timesaving, easily affordable, and portable. The flexible MP3 file format makes them useful in both entertaining and educating us when we are on-the-go. You probably already know it.

But did you know this?

You can save extra time when you listen to recorded-voice MP3 files by increasing the tempo of the MP3 file. And you can do it free to boot.

Why would you want to go the extra mile and speed up an MP3 file? If you are into listening to many MP3 voice recordings especially for education, cutting down on the time is takes to listen to them comes in handy.

Many advanced MP3 players have the options of varying the playback speed. But what if the choices change the tempo and pitch of the recording? Youll hear a bunch of chipmunks as a result. And what about if you have a reliable MP3 player without the extra bells and whistles. Should you part with it and shell out some dough to buy a more advanced model? No worries. Theres a way around it.

In the following list of steps, learn how you can alter the playback speed of MP3 voice recordings without paying a dime for a new, fancy MP3 player, or for anything else.

Here is the list of steps. Take a look:

1.
Download the MP3 file and store it on your PCs hard drive. Remember the files location.

2.
If you already have the Audacity Program, great. If not, go to audacity.sourceforge.net and download it from there. Follow the downloading and installation instructions.

3.
You will need LAME MP3 Encoder file on your computer. You can download it at audacity.sourceforge.net under the Optional Downloads. The encoder file allows you to export MP3 files.

4.
Okay. You have your MP3 file, Audacity and the LAME MP3 Encoder file now ready to go. So, lets

5.
Open the Audacity program. In the menu bar, under File, choose Open. Browse your hard drive and find the MP3 file. Once you find the file, choose it and click the Open button. It may take a short while for the file to export and open in the Audacity program.

6.
Do you have the file open now? Excellent. Now, under Edit (left upper corner), choose Select > All. Your action now selects the entire MP3 file.

7.
Under EFFECT (in the same menu bar as before) choose Change Tempo (about 5th one down the column). A new window opens. You can see a slider bar with a window showing 0.0 percentage change. Thats the spot to alter the MP3s tempo without changing the pitch.

8.
Now, enter the percentage change you want and preview the playback. Usually, somewhere between 10 50% change does the trick. Start at 10% and go up. Preview the playback with every % change you make.

9.
When you are happy with the playback speed, click OK. The rewriting process takes a few moments. Once its finished, youll see the original MP3 file duration display shorter by the % change youve chosen.

10.
Now, click somewhere in the big gray rectangle below the new waveform of the MP3 file. Make sure this deselects any portions of the waveform.

11.
Got it? Good. Now, go to File (left upper corner menu bar again) and choose Export As MP3. A new window opens and gives you the choices to name your new file and store it. Go ahead and do that. You can add the word FAST at the end of the file name to recognize it from the original file later.

12.
Almost done. Close Audacity now. If you want to keep the original file intact as it were, click on No and Audacity closes.

13.
Now, all you have to do is to download the faster MP3 file to your MP3 player and boogie down the road, so to speak. If you need help with transferring downloadable audio books, MP3 books, MP3 music or any MP3 voice recordings to your MP3 player, youll find http://www.mybigaudio.com/help.html video section useful .

You are done. Congratulations! Downloadable audio books on-the-go can go even faster. See, its easy to speed up MP3 books, teleconferences, or any other recorded voice in MP3 format.

Four Tips on How to Choose an LCD TV

Post on Sep 29th 2008

Once obtainable only with small screens, LCD (liquid-crystal display) TVs now come with bigger screens suitable for your Homes primary set.

Here are four tips on how to choose the right one:

1). Think about what level of picture quality you are willing to pay for The best LCD TVs are equipped for excellent picture quality. For a main TV or one you will watch often, it will be best to get an HD set with 1024×768 resolutions. On screens larger than 30 inches or so, 1366×758 has the potential to offer better quality, though native screen resolution in and of itself does not guarantee a certain level of picture quality. It will be better to get a standard definition LCD TV only for small sets used for casual viewing, where you would not want the cable or satellite box you generally need to receive HD signals. The picture quality almost certainly will not be as good as what you will get with an HD set.

2). Make sure you verify the viewing angle Viewing angles have enhanced, so a lot of new LCD TVs display a better image from off-center than old sets did a must if several people will watch the TV at once. Some sets have wider viewing angles than others do. Before you buy, see how the picture looks if you step off to the side or move up and down. With some you will see dimmer, somewhat washed out image as your viewing position angles away, particularly in a vertical direction.

3). Make sure inputs are easy to use On many LCD TVs, the connections are on the side or back of the TV and might be tough to reach. Some bigger models have a split control unit to which you connect all your audio and video devices. You then only have one cable going from the control box to the panel itself. That is a bonus for wall mounting and can make the inputs easier to get to.

4). Think about a set that can also be used as a computer monitor If you need a computer monitor as well as a TV, check connectivity options. An HD set with high native resolution is best for computer use. A standard VGA connection works with all computers, a (DVI) input would be compatible with newer midrange computers.

Home Entertainment - Music to Your Ears?

Post on Sep 28th 2008

Not so long ago, watching films at home was a hopeless experience. You could only buy or rent poor-quality videos with a grainy picture and bad sound. The experience was terrible when you compared to the big-screen, surround-sound cinema.

Now, though, the advent of DVD and home surround sound means that watching movies at home doesnt have to be inferior to watching them in the cinema. In fact, many people now think its better after all, its cheaper, and you dont have to put up with other people making noises while youre trying to watch the film. Home entertainment systems (also known as home cinemas) are getting cheaper, better and easier to construct all the time.

So what are the ingredients of a home entertainment system? Basically, there are three things: a source of high quality video and audio, a display for the video, and speakers for the audio. To begin with, you should look for a DVD player. Although you can get DVD players for nothing now, you should get a good one if youre going to use it as part of a home entertainment system. Cheap players may output inferior quality picture and sound, and might even have trouble playing some DVDs at all.

The next step is a big television, either flat with an LCD or plasma screen, or perhaps even a projection TV be careful with projection though, as it can break if you plan to use your TV for video games. You should consider getting an HDTV version of whatever you choose if you want to future-proof your system and make your films look just that little bit better.

Finally, you should get some good surround sound speakers, together with an amplifier or stereo system to drive them. Although you can get systems now with ridiculous numbers of speakers, Dolby 5.1 is still the best system to go with, as it is the most widely supported.

Recordable DVD Players

Post on Sep 28th 2008

Recordable DVD players are perfect solution for recording movies, sporting events, and your favorite TV programs. Recordable DVD players can include advanced player features such as progressive scan video output, built-in Dolby Digital and DTS, audio decoders, and high quality video and audio inputs and outputs, including component video and optical digital connections. Recordable DVD players promise top quality recording to the available space on a digital disc.

There are six recordable versions of DVD. They are DVD-R for General, DVD-R for Authoring, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD+R. DVD-R and DVD+R can record data whereas DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW can be rewritten many times. The problem is that recording formats are not compatible with each other.

Recordable DVD players work like a VCR. These players have a tuner and A/V input. An important difference is that there is no need to rewind or fast forward recordings. Many recordable DVD players include an electronic program guide that gives you onscreen TV listings from which you can select shows to record. DVD video recorders cannot copy most of the protected DVD movie discs. The usual way to use a recorder is to use it as you would use a VCR. The price of recordable DVD players used to be $1,000. Now the prices are falling and could fall to about $160 this year.

New and expensive models of high definition DVD players focus on improving the resolution and sharpness of the broadcast. For this purpose, electronic companies and manufacturers of DVD players are experimenting with a lot of technologies like lasers, complex compression techniques, and very large scale integrated circuits.

Discs produced on recordable DVD players can be played on some computers and DVD players. Some players can automatically create index menus with thumbnail images of each section on the disc. If you want to make permanent recordings from your old videotapes, then record through write-once media. Companies like Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba and others supply recordable DVD players.

Zune Marketplace vs. iTunes

Post on Sep 27th 2008

If you are a digital music aficionado then you certainly dont need to be told what the differences are between the various music download services on the net today. Unfortunately, not all of the people looking to purchase a digital music player know all of the terminology and definitions involved with download services. For those of you unsure of what you need to have or be capable of with your digital music player, consider the following brief definitions of three of the major types of download services on the world wide web for your MP3 player.

iTunes is perhaps the most well-known download site on the internet today with the powerful backing of Apple. While there are other digital music players that can play files downloaded from iTunes, there arent any that work better than Apples own iPod. If you have decided to invest in an iPod, and invest is the right word, then you can be comfortable with anything that you purchase from iTunes. The most impressive part of iTunes, even though it has an impressive array of music tracks and podcasts, is the video portion of iTunes. Download your favorite television shows and watch them when you want, you can find them all on iTunes.

PlaysForSure compatibility is what you will see from virtually every digital music player that isnt made by Apple or Microsoft. Apple and Microsoft wont generally work with PlaysForSure compatible network sites (even though PlaysForSure is basically a Microsoft product). Some PlaysForSure sites that you may have heard of are the sites like Rhapsody and Napster that have gotten a great amount of exposure over the early years of MP3 technology and the legal battles that have ensued. If you purchase a PlaysForSure compatible player you can rest assured that there are places for you to download music for a reasonable price.

Zune Marketplace is the place for the owners of the new Microsoft Zune players to download music especially for their systems. Zune will not technically be PlaysForSure compatible, so you better learn to like the Zune Marketplace if you want to be able to download tunes in addition to the songs that you already know. This site offers tunes for about the same price as iTunes does, but the selection hasnt rivaled the powerful Apple site just yet so dont be disappointed initially. Right now, Zune Marketplace does not have any video to offer, but Microsoft definitely intends to improve this situation as soon as possible.

There is certainly no right answer to which is better or best to this situation as it truly depends on what your situation is or what your goal is from the download service. All will have the ability to get music and listen to it, but if you want versatility it is probably best to invest in the iPod or Zune right now.

James Preston runs the popular DVD to Zune Converter resource guide. To get the latest Microsoft Zune News and to get comprehensive reviews of the latest Zune software and accessories, visit ZuneVideoConverters.com today!

Buying Guide to Plasma TVs

Post on Sep 27th 2008

Plasma TVs and LCD TVs should not be confused with each other, as some people tend to do. Plasma televisions basically use a plasma discharge inside, compared to LCDs which uses a mercury based active matrix system. This TV tends to be more popular among households these days compared to LCD TVs and this is simply because of one thing; the price.

Usually, the price of a Plasma TV would be far cheaper than an LCD TV. This is due to the cost of producing the LCD display panel and the quality of the LCD display itself. Although in general the Plasma TVs resolution is not as good as an LCD TVs, it can still produce very sharp images compared to CRT TVs with the help of various technology.

Worthiness

Sometimes when it comes to buying Plasma TVs, many people do not really know the real aspects behind choosing the correct one. There are many different sizes of Plasma TVs, but when you choose one, make sure the TV does not take up too much space in your house.

This is because unlike LCD displays, even the smallest Plasma TV is 40 inches in dimension. And usually Plasma TVs come with a mounting stand, which nowadays are pretty fashionable compared to the TV itself. The TV is not usually beyond 4 inches in thickness, meaning to say that you can put it right next to your wall without anything next to it, and nobody will realize its even there.

One big difference about Plasma TVs in general compared to LCD TVs is the brightness of the picture as well as the response time of the moving images. Compared to LCD TVs, Plasma TVs are generally not so bright, but these days with so much improvement, the brightness has increased, and sometimes you cant even differentiate between the two.

Response time refers to the time that images take to shift from one frame to another, usually calculated in milliseconds. The lesser it is, or the faster it is, the better. This is because when it is faster, there wont be any ghostly images forming up when there are transitions from white images to black ones.

Another main aspect to consider when it comes to buying Plasma TVs would be the lifetime of the televisions. Usually the manufacturers guarantee a lifetime of 60,000 hours or sometimes more. These days, the lifetime has been extended up to 70,000 hours or even more in many cases. You have to make sure that your TV will last at least 60,000 hours before the brightness begins to fade and the images cant be seen properly.

Plasma Or LCD - Which Is Better?
What are the inherent differences between a Plasma screen TV and an LCD screen?A plasma screen is based similar to a fluorescent light bulb where the image displays make up of cells. Region & Code Free DVD Players

Post on Sep 23rd 2008

You are perplexed at being unable to view anything except the message “region error,” while trying to view a set of region-free labeled DVDs on your NTSC player. The reason is simple. The DVD discs have nothing wrong with them and are really region free but the DVD player which you are using has the ability to play only NTSC compatible DVDs and not even a combination of PAL and NTSC DVD. Moreover the disc might be in PAL or SECAM format and your NTSC DVD is incompatible in playing such CDs..

How zonal difference makes the standards different

Different regions in the world use different standards for TV and DVD. While North American and Canadian countries prefer NTSC, European and Asian countries prefer the PAL standards. Then there are a few countries like France that still prefer the older SECAM standards. Some of the countries use combination of standards. All these divergences create real problem for a viewer, since a different device, having the right compatibility with the local standards, is required each time the region changes.

Who requires a region free DVD player most

The people, who are on constant move, may be a businessman on business pursuit, a researcher on different scientific and academic research, a traveler who travels for enjoyment, a pilgrim who travels on religious pursuit, a trekker or explorer who travels for adventure and many others, would need such a DVD player which is region free. Then there is that smaller sector of people who might be shifting from one zone to other with both zones using a different standard for DVD viewing.

The solution

It can never be an adequate solution to go for separate players every time you change your zone for whatever reasons, and even rentals does not seem to be an economically viable solution. Then there is also the problem of availability of real quality items on rental or whatever source it might be.

So what is the solution that would solve the problem of compatibility without being economically strenuous? The real solution to the issue is a region-free DVD player.

What is a region-free DVD Player?

A region free DVD player is capable of playing all region code DVD discs regardless of the standard used by the DVD disc. It means, that with such a region free DVD player you can watch a PAL standard DVD on an NTSC TV. However, if you use a DVD/VCR combo unit, then a multi system TV or a video format converter may be required to play a DVD not originally compatible with the device standard.

Different disc regions

This brings us up to the issue of different DVD disc regions. The region code was used in USA to control the release of movies in regions 2-6 as they were released in region 1. DVD region locking system determines which DVD can be played on which regional DVD player. The Regions are as follows:

United States and Canada combine to form region 1.

Europe, Japan, Egypt, Greenland, South Africa and Middle East form region 2.

Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, and Indonesia form region 3.

Australia, New Zealand, Central and South America, Mexico, Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean form region 4.

Eastern Europe, India, North Korea, Major part of Africa, Mongolia, and Russia form zone 5.

China alone forms zone 6.
Effect of Internet and on line purchase of DVD

Division in zones refers to the fact that DVD players, belonging to a particular zone is incompatible in playing DVDs from another region. But with the advent of Internet and on line purchase of DVD, you have the access of DVDs of your choice, being released through out the world. Therefore, a region free DVD player is the solution to your problem of standards compatibility.

The difference of standards - features

What are these standards that we are referring to so often? Countries, world over, use one of the three main TV broadcast standards. These are PAL, NTSC, or SECAM broadcasting standards. Colour broadcasting system, first introduced in the United States of America during the year 1953, is based on National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard. It has 525 lines/frames and used mostly in North America and Japan. On the other hand, the Phase Alternating Line (PAL) system that came up in 1960s is used in most Asian and European countries and this standard uses 625 lines/frames. The quality of picture is a trifle better with PAL system than the NTSC. The last one is Sequential Color with Memory (SECAM) system, mostly used in France, has the same lines/frame density as that of PAL system, but transmits colour information sequentially.

The following are the features of the different standards:

NTSC Standard

SYSTEM NTSC M

Lines/Field 525/60

Horizontal Frequency 15.734 kHz

Vertical Frequency 60 Hz

Video Bandwidth 4.2 MHz

Sound Carrier 4.5 MHz

PAL Standard

SYSTEM PAL B,G,H PAL I PAL D PAL M PAL N

Line/Field 625/50 625/50 625/50 625/50 525/60

Horizontal Frequency 50 Hz 50 Hz 50 Hz 50 Hz 60 Hz

Color Sub-carrier Frequency 4.433618 MHz 4.433618 MHz 4.433618 MHz 3.582056 MHz 3.575611 MHz

Video Bandwidth 5.0 MHz 5.5 MHz 6.0 MHz 4.2 MHz 4.2 MHz

Sound Carrier 5.5 MHz 6.0 MHz 6.5 MHz 4.5 MHz 4.5 MHz

SECAM Standard

SYSTEM SECAM B,G,H SECAM ,K,K1,L

Line/Field 625/50 625/50

Horizontal Frequency 15.625 kHz 15.625 kHz

Vertical Frequency 50 Hz 50 Hz

Video Bandwidth 5.0 MHz 6.0 MHz

Sound Carrier 5.5 MHz 6.5 MHz

Options

A DVD player does convert a Video standard and therefore the problems will be that a PAL DVD will not play on a NTSC DVD player. However, a multi system TV, that is able to receive all types of signals, will allow you to watch DVD of any standard you want to see. You can also use an external converter to convert the signals from PAL to NTSC or vice versa, but obviously, the best choice would be the region free DVD player with a built in video standards converter.

Region free DVD player - a modern requirement

The days of visiting an outdoor movie theater to watch the movies of your choice is now practically over. You can watch them in the cool comfort of your home, at a time convenient to you. You may like to watch the video in parts, depending on the availability of your time, or you may like to have a family get together to view them. The prices of both players and discs are on the down slide while quality is going up with the application of the sate-of-art technology. In every respect, DVD is the best home entertainment today. But with its phenomenal success has brought in the difficulties relating to region coding or region lock.

The legal standing

Manufacturers feel that the new releases of DVD CDs need to be protected. The reason for such protection could be the price difference of such CDs in the world market. If such a CD has been released in the United States and is made code free, that particular CD would be a lot cheaper in the Asian countries comparatively, and as such the concerned company would be making losses. To block such a purpose, the CDs have been regionally coded.

On the other hand, many consider the code enforcement to be a violation of WTO free trade agreement and other legal provisions ancillary to it. Both, the Governments of Australia and New Zealand, have taken similar stands. They have put in place laws to the effect that, DVD players sold in their countries have to be code free or region free. Such DVD players are made to be compatible to all region codes, and hence capable of playing any DVD, irrespective of the standard used or the zone to which it belongs.

Ceiling Mount a Home Theater Front Projector - Metalcraft Mounting System

Post on Sep 23rd 2008

After I fainted from sticker shock at the pricing of the official Sanyo PLV-Z3 projector ceiling mount ($200), I found a much cheaper solution. For $36.95 I could buy a Metalcraft all metal adjustable ceiling mount off ebay.

Mounting a projector to my ceiling was easier than I thought. Heres how I did it.

Tools youll need:

* Philips Hand Screw Driver

* Circular Level

* EZ Anchor Stud Solvers

* Tape Measure

* Step Ladder

Size up the mounting hardware: The Metalcraft mounts ceiling plate is large measuring five by five inches square with six pre-drilled holes for ceiling screws. A post descends to the projector mount plate.

How I measured my room for optimum mount placement: Bisecting the width of the room, considering the airduct, and measuring eleven and a half feet from the front projector screens surface plus the half the length of the mounting plate, I placed the plate on the ceiling and marked each screw hole.

Anchored to ceiling: Wear safety goggles to avoid getting ceiling board dust in your eyes. I removed the plate and drove the metal EZ Anchor Stud Solver anchors until they were flush with the ceiling. The EZ Anchors are great because you never have to drill a pilot hole for the self-tapping anchors. I replaced the plate over the anchors and drove each #8 screw into its anchor. You may need an extra hand to hold the plate in place while you tighten the first two to four screws.

Attach the projector plate before attaching to ceiling plate: Since the mount assembly breaks into two parts, one attaching to the ceiling with a post that screws into the adjustment plate for the projector, you can screw and tighten the hex screws and plastic bushings to the projector body.

Secure the projector plate to the ceiling mount: The Metalcraft ceiling mounts post accepts a adjustable knob screw. You will need someone to help you get the screw started while they lift up the projector. With the screw tight you can rotate the projector from left to right on the ceiling post.

Fine-tuning: The Metalcraft mount allows yaw, pitch and rotation. With the hand tightening of knobs on the projector mount plate you can canter your projector perfectly on your projection screen. With the aid of a circular bubble level you can level the projector from front to back and left to right using the corresponding thumb knobs. With projector level you can then adjust your lense up and down and to the side for a perfect screen fill with no keystone distortion correction.

Caveat: The Metalcraft mount is wobbly because of the thinness of the metal used on the metal band that holds the projector mount to the ceiling mount post. When you need to change interconnects or adjust manual focus and zoom the projector rocks slightly as the metal gives. This does not cause the projector to fall out of register, though. Hey$36.95what do you expect?

The Metalcraft Mounting System for the Sanyo PLV-Z3 LCD projector (and many other projector brands and models) is a great bargain and very reliable. Highly recommended.

Father, Husband and Geek. My geeky interests have not changed since I was a kid. I still love comic books, anime, role-playing games, console video games, indie rock, imported toys and mecha models, bad American and great British sitcoms, and all the tech that lets me experience these hobbies to their fullest. Now that Im married with children, Ive had to strike a balance between supporting and pleasing my family and feeding my geekery hunger. Lucky for me, my wife is very accomodating and even geeks out with me on occasion (the ladies love Joss Whedons “Firefly”). My two year old likes anything that moves on the front projection screen and makes noise, so far she is easy to please.
